This proxy stuff is really my domain (and the bane of my existence),
but I'm traveling and will be for probably another week.  Probably the
best thing to do at this point is to

  a) get yourself a little test directory
  b) write a short script to fetch a file using urlgrabber
  c) copy the relevant libraries into that directory (urlgrabber
     stuff, urllib2, httplib)
  d) edit your local copies to dump info about what's going on

That may seem daunting, but it's really not so bad.  If you don't mind
the wait, I'll be getting back into this stuff probably in a week or
so.
