[Yum] bad headers with yum install

Using RedHat ES 3 update 3 (as shipped, no updates on top of that) I
can't seem to get yum install to work.  It complains about incomplete
headers.

This is against a repository I created using createrepo.  If I point
to a DAG repository it works.  For example, this works:

baseurl=http://apt.sw.be/redhat/el4/en/i386/dag/


but the el3 one does not. (not xml enabled?)
