I've found urpmi quite useful.  I had to upgrade a number of packages
just to meet yum's requirements.  After that, "yum upgrade" did load a
bundle of 237 packages to complete the Mandrake 9.1 to 9.2 transition. 
That was pretty slick.  In the 3 weeks since, "yum check-update" hasn't
found anything to do :-(
