hi folks, as promised :) - 0.8.9 is out and it should fix the updates vs upgrade problem. What Grigory and Icon recommended is more or less what I did. yum update now only does updates - no obsoletes yum upgrade (no arguments passed to it) now does obsoletes if and only if there is not an update for a package you have installed. so obsoletes only happen if there is no other update.
