I tried that earlier as well, should have mentioned, apologies for forgetting to do so.
I just see nothing and then the grub menu shows up as usual

the vm is centos 6u5

I'm on ubu 14.04 for the host
1.2.2-0ubuntu13.1.9 for libvirt-bin

I believe
<bios useserial='yes'/>
is the option that makes this work.
