Reading more carefully, the kernel requirement is only for the _guest_.

That linux-kvm.org page also says, "At the moment the kernel modules are
automatically loaded in the guest but the interface should be started
manually (dhclient/ifconfig)". Now, I'm certainly hoping that's been fixed
by now. It doesn't require a manual ifconfig, right?

According to .config CONFIG_VIRTIO_NET=y for the guest.
