And as a reminder (more to myself, perhaps), part of flushing this out
into a full series rather than just an RFC on the semantics will be
adding a patch that exposes the ability for top-level commit, similar to
what was done in commit 85a3eb8 for exposing whether disk snapshot is
supported.
