Given what I am seeing in the iproute package, I am going to proceed with the patch for libvirt assuming that prefix=0 is valid for both IPv4 and IPv6,

You suggested approach for checking for a zero address was what I wanted to do but was not sure how to do when I was pressed for time. Still need to check for zero address and zero prefix or netmask so that defaults do not kick in.
