I updated the commit message based on that IRC conversation, hopefully
to make it a bit clearer.  But don't feel bad about having sub-wizard
status with autotools; it's already unfair that I'm the autoconf
maintainer and know this stuff a bit better than average :)

And if anyone else has questions on making the autotools do what you
