To answer our 'make clean' question, I was about to reply, so here's a copy-paste from the draft mail: 'make clean' doesn't clean everything and that's on purpose. There are Makefile targets that cleans more than that, it depends on what you want to clean. You can use distclean (cleaning also all distribution-specific files), maintainer-clean (cleaning generated files by tools not needed for the compilation) and probably more (I don't know these). There is a git command to remove everything that is not in the repository, but that can remove *everything* that git doesn't know about, so I don't recommend that if you're not sure this is exactly what you wanted.
