-M going away will take a while (and will likely never happen).

While that may be true, we've already been bitten in the past by using undocumented commands. See for example commit e997c268efd, where qemu-img silently quit supporting -e, but libvirt had been using it under the assumption that it would continue to work.

I'll work up a patch for this.
