Actually, I squashed in five more upstream gnulib commits, including the
one that added the syntax-check that prevents future [PATH_MAX] allocations:

478c2dc maint.mk: test further PATH_MAX issues
ff3ad37 maint.mk: add syntax-check to avoid char[PATH_MAX]
dffc41f stat: be robust to PATH_MAX definition
df1c234 link: work around IRIX bug
cbf3811 getopt: silence clang warning
