The presence of ${mac1} in $cmdfile causes the problem. Eliminating
$mac1 makes the problem go away.

$mac1 is initialized like this:
my $mac1 =  get_first_macaddress($dom1);

I guess, reading from the XML causes some sort of encoding problem. I
googled for the error message and found similar problems which were
fixed by using utf8::encode.
