This patch series is a continuation of a previous series that was already mostly merged. The one unmerged patch from the previous series is patch 6 in this series and has been rebased to git master. The other 5 patches are an attempt to address some things that Cole suggested in the previous review. I'm not sure whether I split the patches up too finely or not, but I'm happy to combine a couple of these patches if requested.
