What is coverity saying exactly? Is it only complaining about this
particular use of g_return_val_if_fail?

This is exactly what coverity says:

"62584 Negative loop bound

Loop may run for a long time or not at all.

In osinfo_loader_os: Negative value used as a loop upper bound (CWE-606)"
