I've been poking around the network config in CentOS 5 recently. In that OS, specifying GATEWAY in the ifcfg-eth1 script should not be a problem (although possibly not exactly desired) - it scans those files as well when setting up the default route. Does it make a difference if you specify --gateway= before --device? (never tried that myself, so don't know if it's supposed to work). Moray.
