Ok, I did that.. and I put the updated file in updates.img.. It finally 
took... New problem.  The installer fails if there is no other hdd disk on 
the machine because (I think) it will only install grub onto an MBR of 
real HDD.  If I have a disk in the machine, it will only let me install 
grub on the MBR of the HDD or the /boot partition of sda (my USB key).

Maybe a manual grub-install will work after the install...  Maybe there's 
another workaround for this..
