I'm able to ftp > it from one box and mount via mount -o loop dd.img /mnt/loop For a local driver disk getDDFromDev() is called which tries vfat,ext2,iso9660 Without a device you get getDDFromSource() -> mountLoopback() and mountLoopback only tries iso9660,ext2,cramfs.
