Did you add the new initrd.img to grub.conf?  Did you change grub.conf
to reflect the fact that you now have a SCSI device instead of an IDE?

I solved the problem like this
mkinitrd is a command that makes it for you a new initrd
don't forget to place the driver in the kernel driver tree (/lib/modules/2.4.18-14/kernel/drivers/...)

then do:

cd /boot
mkinitrd initrd-2.4.18-14-sata.img 2.4.18-14
vi grub/grub.conf
(change the initrd to be used)
