RH 7.1 non-selection of bigmem kernel

I have 2 custom distributions. One is based on RH 7.1 with errata kernel
2.4.18-24.7.x. The other is based on RH 8.0 with kernel 2.4.18-26.8.0.

I have an IBM x345 with 8GB memory. The RH 7.1 installs the uniprocessor
kernel, but the RH 8.0 installs the bigmem kernel (as it should).

Does anyone know what would make the difference? Is there anything in the
RH 7.1 distribution I could upgrade to get it to install the bigmem kernel
itself? I could do it as a post installation step, but would rather not.
