Just FYI, RPM2, is a handy dandy perl library that exposes the librpm api. It is not as mature as the python bindings though, but it is on its way. The anaconda/kickstart installer is written in Python, and as such has extensive RPM capabilities. Capabilities which perl, AFAIK, does not have. That, plus the ability to re-use code from anaconda is why python is extensivly used in this community.
