RE: integrating updates

I use AutoUpdate to maintain my distro. I just have a cron job that runs
after autoupdate that runs genhdlist.

In fact, I am currently updating it to use a separate directory to download
the new rpms into, then I will have scripts that will send me an email to
let me know that new rpms are waiting. I can then update my test machine and
make sure that there are no problems with the new packages, then I can go to
a web page and incorporate the new rpms into my distro.

I have been working on this problem off and on for about a year. I
essentially do what most of us do and that is to put together some
scripts that munge the updates to a distro directory. I decided to take
it a step further and make a project out of it. I am calling it
kick2date. (nice huh?)

The official site (projects.commnav.com/desktop/kick2date) isn't exactly
ready for prime time, but then again the project itself isn't much. So
I set up a quick one in my public_html directory.

http://users.commnav.com/~pearcec/

I made it into an rpm for easy installation. The documentation is
written in docbook. I know overkill, but I wanted to learn it. The
build and releasing is done with ant. Again overkill but ant is a great
tool.

Project goals :
* painless installation and upgrading
* multiple distributions
* 100% proper merging off all rpms (by this I mean the updated distro
directory should be that of what Red Hat would release)
* Great documentation to explain how to create the distro directory,
from both iso images and CD-ROMs. Explain the setup of http, nfs, or
ftp.
* Provide a good forum for an online community

Future ideas :
* Add support for different mirrors
* Add support for auto updating. (By this I mean install kick2date as a
client to your kickstart server. The client will be intelligent enough
to seek out your updates directory, whether it is accessible ftp, http
or nfs. With a little configuration of course)
* Scripts for creating CD-ROMs with updated rpms

The documentation is include in the rpm in html form. The documentation
is in flux, but you should be able to figure it out. Also the site
listed in the rpm info isn't ready yet.

GIve it a go. I am interested in what everyone has to say.

And if the logo doesn't make you want to download it. I don't know what
will.
