Does it have to be SMB? You're making life difficult for yourself.

I suspect the kernel modules for smbfs don't load with the kickstart
kernel, but I might be wrong.

smbclient will let you pull files from a Windows share. This isn't quite
the same as a mounted filesystem, but it might do what you need.
