Rob Day recommended that trick. I really like all of the other comments I received, but when it came down to it that seemed the simplest command. I am going to run the script right now, so I will hopefully come back with a success story when this is done (I had to edit some other problems with the script...).

Just stick in a call to 'chvt 3' before you redirect and you can script
the ctrl-alt-F3 part as well.--
