Shrinking kernel and/or initrd.img

I needed to add a new scsi module to the kernel(2.2-14) of a
kickstart install (RH6.2) that we use. Unfortunately now the kernel
no longer fits on the floppy install disk. Does anyone have any
suggestions for either shrinking the kernel (we have tried several
times to recompile it but can't get it as small as we need), or making
     initrd.img smaller.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

     Thanks,

     Jeff
