postinstall files have ? at end

When our postinstall program on RH7 does an echo to create a file like:
	echo "mybox" > /etc/HOSTNAME

The file ends up being /etc/HOSTNAME? (with a ? at the end of it). Why is
this doing this and how do you stop it from happening. Does it have to do
with how the ks.cfg file is created -or- how it is copied to the floppy
disk?

Much Thanks,
-Dan
