Indeed it would. There are python bindings available in RHEL 6, however
they are broken for SNMPv3, though that should be fixed any day now with
the release of 6.2, see here:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=710667.

However the problem is, and perhaps I am making a mountain out of
nothing, only the latest version of net-snmp have python bindings, and
as such a wrapper around snmpget CL operations is more generic and
portable.

I could create a generic setup using snmpget, not sure about that yet.
But after this latest patch (forthcoming) we will have v2c and v3
supported which covers most everything but the very oldest v1 setups, or
if not old, those manufacturers who refuse to budge and implement new
snmp setups.
