Parse error trying to run puppet

I want to use func to ask minions to run puppet.  I get the following
error after about 10 seconds:

[root@oak ~]# func tomcat1.waterman.dmz call command run "puppetd --test"
('tomcat1.waterman.dmz',
 ['REMOTE_ERROR',
  'xml.parsers.expat.ExpatError',
  'not well-formed (invalid token): line 9, column 15'])

Am using func-0.21-1.el5 on both ends.

Any idea what's going on?
