more

All the images and banners are saved as png, and while some require this
(for eample the games spin) others do not and needlessly increase the
 bandwidth of the website.

In more than one case png is chosen where jpg would save a huge amount of
 space and download time.

Quick test in Riot and Color Quantizer:

 f17_banner_background.png (Riot):
 original: ~1.8mb
Optimized jpg (no change in visual quality): 53kb

 games-banner.png (Color Quantizer):
 original: ~250kb
 optimized 512colour version: ~120kb

 fudcon-blacksburg-2012.png (Riot or Color Quantizer):
 Original: ~1.23mb
Optimized jpg (no change in visual quality): 170kb
Optimized png 512 colours with full alpha: ~512kb

 jbossas7_bkg.png (Riot or Color Quantizer)
 Original: ~250kb
Optimized jpg no visual change: ~40kb
 Optimized png 128 colours: ~70kb

 f17_fpo_screenshot.png (Color Quantizer):
 Original: ~100kb
 Optimized 128 colours + full alpha: ~25kb

And I did not even spend time on fine-tuning the settings.

A reduction from ~3.63mb to ~400kb! Well, it's your bandwidth, and it has
a detrimental impact on page download times as well.
