There was a design that included the search field, however, the search was only for the wiki. We held off that part of the design because we currently have no search capabilities on all our sites. We felt it wasn't beneficial to add it because the results and scope of the search was only limited to the wiki and not other things like planet.fp.o, bugs, pkgdb, etc. There has been some investigation and testing on 'search engines' for all our site but there hasn't been any clear winner and progress has stopped for a little while now.
