And if you try it with a non-command-line way?  (Just wondering if
there's some options that you might have to set, now, that get taken
care of for you if you try doing it with another method.)

For example... On MATE, after I lock the screen with the screen-saver,
there's a box that pops up with "leave message, "switch user,"
"cancel," & "unlock," as my options to resume using my PC.

If I click on "switch user" another X session starts up and I can log
in as another user.  And I can hop between either of them with
CTRL+ALT+ F1 or F2.

It would have been nice to have not had to lock the screen first, but I
can unlock it afterwards and both sessions are unlocked as I switch
between them, until a screensaver timer kicks in (if I've set one).
