On MATE, after I lock the screen with the screen-saver, there's a box that pops up with "leave message, "switch user," "cancel," & "unlock," as my options to resume using my PC. If I click on "switch user" another X session starts up and I can log in as another user. And I can hop between either of them with CTRL+ALT+ F1 or F2.
