Thanks. It's not the width of the terminal that I'm concerned with;
it's the nice summary of what dnf just did that I miss.
I've just done a dnf upgrade and the display at the end showing what it
did, from what I can see the output is not different to what dnf4 under
F40 produced. Dnf lists all the packages it is downloading as it
downloads them, in my case in 8 threads, verifies the transaction, and
then either upgrades or installs each package which it lists as it does
it and lists any scripts being run, and then it cleans up all the
outdated packages and lists those as it goes and what script is being
run if any.
As is said, from my perspective the only difference between the two is
in the "cleanup" phase, instead of saying "cleanup" in the message for
the old package it now displays the word "removing". A couple of
snippets from my output are below.

Apparently, I'm not describing this well enough. At the very end of a
run of the old dnf (that is, now 'dnf4 update') there is a nicely
formatted little report printed. Looks like this, in context:
Cleanup : qadwaitadecorations-qt5-0.1.6-2.fc41.x86_64
21/22
Running scriptlet: gnome-settings-daemon-47.1-1.fc41.x86_64

Upgraded:

Complete!
Compare this to the mess you've quoted.
