Back in the early 00's I build a server with 16 SATA disks. I believe they were WD 500GB. There were two HW RAID controllers for 8 disks each configured as RAID-6. Both controllers were then striped into HW RAID-0 doubling the B/W. With a quad Opteron MoBo I was getting around 550MBps measured throughput if memory serves me well.
The purpose was the throughput, money was no concern.
