I have both MATE and Xfce installed.
Whilst I work on my xinit/lightdm problems,
I am firing up my GUI with startx.
startx fires up xfce by default.
How to I tell startx I want to fire up MATE?
Let me Google that for you:

Jeff
I took a look at switchdesk in Xfce (fired up with startx).
It does not find MATE.
Lightdm does find MATE, but won't run it as xinit is
corrupted. I am working on a fix.
mate-sessions fire up xinit, so I am screwed on that front.
This is interesting, switchdesk has a command line
interface:
switchdesk desktopname
And "man switchdesk" show no list option.
But since it does not find MATE, poop!
