The speakers that are not working are the built in laptop speakers

I see this all-the-time on windows installations. The sound
the HDMI digital audio rather than the internal sound card.
Test your speakers first. With teh volume up, unplug the plug
from the computer and touch the end with your hand. if it
buzzes out the speakers, then they are working.
