Thank you for that suggestion. I could login from a console. Clearly the problem was not my password. Auto-relabel did not get me back to the gui, but just getting a console meant I could actually work. I created another user and discovered that that user could login from the gui. Eventually I: Created another wheel user; from that user, renamed my home directory and put a dummy in its place; userdel'ed my account; uaseradd'ed my account with UID 1000 .
