This was the problem. I added a console boot parameter trying to get a serial port to work on this headless system. Once I removed that, my temporary display and keyboard showed the error messages. The error is drops into emergency mode with "Failed to start initrd-switch-root.service". Now to troubleshoot that. Thank you for the help that set me on the right path! -- Garry T.
