I don't use Thunderbird, but is this a POP account being stored in Mbox
format? If you want to keep using POP, a better alternative is to keep
your mail in Maildir format (which I assume TB supports). That never
needs compacting.
The compacting is for the local storage. Maildir is server-side behind
the mail server.
