I'd be interested to know how it works for you. Setting a host's name using hostname is _the way_ to set a host name. Or it was until Poettering came along. You don't have to take my word on it. W. Richard Stevens writes prodigiously about these topics in his books. The hostname program is covered in APUE p. 155.
