OT: xplanet cloudmaps

Hi,

For several years, until pre-pandemic times, I used to download cloudmaps and overlay them on my xplanet. It was kind of cool, and also I could see some of the heavier weather tracking around the world. Then, I believe that that source got hacked and I never found a replacement.

This bug of desire to get back these cloudmaps bites me once in a while, and I have looked around and not found anything worthwhile and that still works (see https://krkeegan.com/new-free-source-for-xplanet-cloud-map/, whose replacement also appears to no longer work). However, I am not very good at DDGing online, but I was wondering if anyone had any experience/suggestions.

I used to use a perl script called download_xplanet_cloudmap that would go through a bunch of mirrors. However, none of them work and I get:

download_xplanet_cloudmap: ERROR: tried to download the file 6 times, but no servers could provide the file

I do get a clouds.jpg map which is of type:

clouds.jpg: JPEG image data, JFIF standard 1.01, aspect ratio, density 1x1, segment length 16

I doubt this is anything worthwhile, and in any case I can not figure out how to look at this jpeg file (JFIF?).

But I was hoping that someone had some experience with this old tool that is quite nice (and still supported by Fedora).

Many thanks and best wishes,
Ranjan

Btw, if you are interested, and do not know of this perl script, it is here:
 $ fpaste download_xplanet_cloudmap
