Read the same, but it was working flawlessly at least until a year ago that I started having this issue.

Is it possible there is a screen or power saver running, and sometimes
it hasn't kicked in, and sometimes it has? Is there anything
different in journalctl -r when this happens, and when it doesn't
happen? Maybe this is what you mean by system log?
I do not think so, I think I disabled all power saving and screen saving services / settings.
I am running XFCE so I do not know if I got them all.

Have you tried switching to a virtual console (say Ctrl-Alt-F3), and
then back again (Ctrl-Alt-F1)? I think that does a context switch, so
should give something a kick.
No. I will try next time it happens. Will that combination work under XFCE?
