I am not probably being helpful here, but during installation, did you do Custom partition. If so, you should have been able to mount the "old" /home as an encrypted partition once you satisfactorily answered the passphrase question. That is what I do. All my laptop /home's are encrypted by employer requirement. Again, not sure if it helps, since you are asking for a post hoc solution.
