You have this quite confused. DHCP and mdns are orthogonal. The device still gets an IP normally using DHCP. mdns is a replacement for dynamic dns on a local network. It's so that you can find your device regardless of what IP it ends up getting because it has a fixed name. And it broadcasts that info locally so that other devices know it's there. Whether or not you personally like it, it's very useful and extremely helpful for less technical people.
