I don't really understand all the ins and outs of this, as I have it disabled because I am using a custom DNS solution via the kresd package. But, it gives you a place to start looking. I have seen many messages about this, and there are ways to turn it off or customize it, so you should be able to do what you want. Though the latest messages I saw were problems with getting virtual machines to use a custom hostname.
