If it's really nnondeterministic, it's what's called a mandelbug.
When booting the new kernel, it fails the same way every time.
Very deterministic.
mount: /boot/efi: unknown filesystem type 'vfat'.
What I don't remember is what this multi-stage install-reboot was trying to accomplish.
Looking back in messages or journalctl, I don't see anything.
But it was doing something explicitly.
