Yes, fc-list shows the Liberation-* fonts.
xfontsel and the X11/Motif application do not find them.
Nor should they, as X11/Motif uses freetype2.
On Fedora 34, xfontsel does find the liberation fonts.
X11/Motif support (or at least, claims to support) Type 1 and
TrueType (TTF) as well.
It has been years since I installed scalable fonts (PFB) on SGI IRIX64.
The hard part was constructing the XLFD files.
