Why are you using xfontsel? "fc-cache" is for fontconfig which is the
method used for fonts for quite a while now. I assume there is some
sort of bridge between the two, but unless you're trying to use a really
old program, fontconfig is how fonts are accessed. Is something not
working (other than xfontsel)? Gnome has a font viewer. I assume KDE
has something similar.
I'm trying to revive an old program which uses Motif. It fails
exactly the same as xfontsel.
