I encountered a bug in nouveau for older nvidia cards that was just a typo, but
took a couple kernel versions to be corrected. It is easy for an update to affect
older hardware as collateral damage that goes undetected because few people
use old hardware and even fewer report the bug.
I have also encountered problems where binary blobs for older hardware were
removed from some distributions because the vendor was not maintaining them.
In that case I had to manually add the missing file.
