It's been many months, but for completeness I thought I would follow-up and report that it turned out to be a problem with the monitor. I sent it back to Samsung at their expense, but then they couldn't fix their own monitor due to parts availability, and a replacement was backordered, lol. So after a week or so of having it back, the problem hasn't happened since, glad to say.
