We're getting into myths and legends territory. Running sync before
umount isn't harmful, but umount will flush any dirty buffers, so it
isn't necessary.
I'm not suggesting any myths. I agree that umount is supposed to sync
before finishing, but if something is going wrong with the umount, then
the sync will at least make sure everything is written.
